Description
Randolph Nitrate Dope Clear is a traditional aircraft fabric finish used to seal and protect cotton or linen fabric covering on fabric-covered aircraft. This cellulose-nitrate-based dope has been a standard in general aviation for decades, particularly among owners and builders of classic taildraggers and ultralight aircraft who prefer period-correct materials or need reliable fabric stiffening and UV protection without color pigments.
Apply multiple thin coats to build gloss and rigidity in the fabric weave. Nitrate dope shrinks as it dries, naturally tautening the fabric surface, and cures to a hard, glossy finish that accepts paint topcoats well. Work in a well-ventilated space or spray booth—vapors are flammable and solvents are harsh. Check your aircraft’s type certificate or restoration documentation to confirm compatibility with your airframe before purchasing; some restored or vintage aircraft specify nitrate dope, while others may call for acrylic or poly-fiber systems.
